SALE OF JERSEY BULLS

TE AWAMUTU PROPOSALS. STRATFORD BREED CLUB NOT FAVOURABLE. At .1 meeting of Llio executive «>' the Stratford Jersey pattle Club, held yesterday, consideration was given to a lengthy report, torwarded },L%y 'the fie AWjumutu Club, of a meeting held to discuss the question of the sale of bulls, the suggestion being that 1111 pedigree* (bulls sold under the auspices o[ the club should have a certain butter-fat backing and conform to a certain standard of type and constitution. To Awamutu claimed that, without being able to qualify t»> fixed standairds, a bull could not be likely to improve the breed. By establishing these standards, the club would bo justifying the purpose for which it was formed. , The following mation had been carried: "That steps be taken to ensure that all bulls sold under the auspices, of the club be of a certain type, constitution and butter-fat backing; thi s to mean that the dam of the bull must reach CO.It. standard under C.O.R. or associated herd tests and the dam of the sire to have also reached a C.O.R. standard. In case of breeding cows with one, two or three-quarters only, such cows are to be accepted as of butter-Tat back-fi-ng "faW w more daughters have reached 0.0. R. standard. strictions for the next sale are to be enforced with regard to type and constitution only and for the following year with regard to type, constitution and butter-fat backing". The communication from the To Awamutu Club stated that they had decided to ask the parent body to appoint an officer to inspect the j bulls (sold under jthe lausupioes otf club, and to reject all that did not come up to the standard. The chairman (Mr. D. O'Sullivan) said Te Awamutu was just branching out, and, though he would like to* give the club every assistance, he, 'would not like to see the motion i endorsed as it stood. The presentday purchaser was usually well acquainted with butter-fat records and any bull well supported in its pedigree would commend a higher price than a bull of inferior breed.

It was decided that, while in sympathy, with the Te Awamutu Club, the Sftnatfordi could plot isee its way to take any action. BULL PURCHASE SCHEME. Mr.. O'Sullivaoi reported upon the scheme adopted by the parent body to finance the purchase of. approved' pedigree Jersey bulls. He suggested that any member knowing of a farmer wishing to secure a. bull on these lines, should advise the secretary, who would send forward the application. The parent body, Mr. o'Sullivan said, had accumulated a large fund and young breeders should not hesii'tatei to make use of the financing scheme. The rate of inter-? est was reasonably low. FIELD DAY. The '"New 'Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association advised that the council ha* considered the Stratford club's letter regarding the reported advocacy of grade bulls by the Herd-Testing Association, but particularly -to young breeders, of these periodic demonstrations. The matter of arranging a suitable place was left to the chairman and Mr. S. Cadsby, while the date and other arrangements will be fixed by the committee. Mr. E. Griffiths, New Plymouth, i s to be asked to act as demonstrator. In discussing farms suitable for the field day, members expressed a desire to have the venue jclose to Btnaitford {so that school; children could be given every encouragement to attend. GENERAL. Mrs A. J. Barr, widow of the form|er secretary of tile club, wrote thanking the club for its generous help in defraying the cost of the memorial erected in memory of her husband. Mrs. I. M. Thompson, Stratford, was elected a member of the Ciub. It wa.3 decided to hold a Jersey fiield day. The chairman drew attention to the fine educational value, had decided not to take any action in the matter.
