"STRATFORD EVENING POST" TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 1929. A GOOD CIVIC SPIRIT.

TUB gate at the senior championship match at Eltham on Saturday was something* in the nat- ) lire of a record, from which it may he seen that as a result of the "Mine in question being played there, a large number of visitors was attracted to that town. The people 'of Eltham were very pleased about it, and at a function held in the evening the Mayor, Mr Ira J. Bridspeakinp; of course"on behalf of the citizens, as well as of himself, thanked the Raurby Union for playing the match there. ?He made it clear that the Union's action was greatly appreciated. The.principle of encouraging the playing of matches at the smaller centres of the province was a sound one, he said, both from a financial point of view and from the aspect of fostering the Rugby code. The Borough Council, said Mr Bridger, were anxious to do everything: possible to assist the Union. They did not assume that the ground was the worst or that the ground was the best, but they Avere all anxious to improve it, and would welcome sugg-estions towards that end, especially from the Union. The remarks of the Mayor of Eltham show that the people of that town realise the benefits, which accrue from having functions there which will attract visitors, and that they are out to do what they can to rentier ail possible assitance to those controlling such functions. In this regard it may be mentioned that the Eltham Borough authorities in addition to the work done by the local football club, took a keen interest in the arrangements for the match and .gave all possible assistance. Then they ask for suggestions from the Rugby Union with a view to meeting the 'latter in any possible manner and extending co-operation. It may be assumed that such co-operation will be accorded to any other organisation wishing to stage an .attraction at Eltham. The] whole thing- shows a splendid .civic spirit which could be emulated with advantage by jther Taraiiaki 'towns.
