ROAD TO MOUNTAIN HOUSE

i THE WORK INSPECTED. I EXCELLENT PROGRESS MADE. On Thursday afternoon the mem- | hers of the. East Committee of the Egmont NationaJ Park Board paid a i visit of inspection to th» road to the, East Mountain House, under tlie guidance of Mr J. McOormick, the Public Works engineer m charge of tlie. work. The men h.a,v e bee n on the job only about a month, but it was found that excellent progress haa bqen made, with the formation preparatory to the metalling of the) road, and members of the committee' expressed entire satisfaction with the plans of th<l Department and with the manner in which tlie work is being carried out. Recent wet weather has interfered with work, hut the surveys have been completed, and abont a mile, of the. road inside the gate is at present being treated; and when the job i'r finished! there will be a two-way motor road, eighteen feet- wide on straight sections and twenty feet wide at curves. AN EASY GRADE. , , Metal will, be laid to a width of ten feet t 0 a. depth of at least sis inches, i and a finish will be given by a riding cushion of three inches of conglomerate .blinding. Where the road h.a s bad to be reisurveye.d some ingenuity has been exercised in sparing the big native trees. The grade will be surprisingly easy, and at no point will it be more than one in eleven. Every three chains "get-aways" have been dug into the bush to ensure that surface water will i:un away quickly off the rqad, an<J are so constructed aa to enable the care.taker easily to see where any blockage takes, place. The metal fo r the road is being got from a quarry situated midway, between the gatej and the House., and only, a short distance from the course of the road. Five thousand yards of metal w iH be required, but there is a practically, unlimited supply in the quarry. A portable crusher will be installed, and the ratej of progress with the metalling will depend on the number of lorries it is possible to use. About twenty men are etogaged on the work, and they are accommodated in camps at the qarry and at the. House. Where the metal reaches the House, provision is made for a circular drive enclosing the proposed fernery and fountain.

COUNTY* COUNCIL WORK. t Under presemt conditions it. is im- ! possible to set a car past the gate;, and it is the intention of the Publia i Works Department to lock the gate ; J until a better surface has been got. s The Stratford County Council staff is weill ahead with the reconstruction of Pembroke Road. About a mile of the road from the Borough boundary has been metalled, ready for the apt plication of bitumen in the summer. I From Bark ley Road t 0 the gate, a distance of about a. mile, curve's are beinjr reduced, corners ; and a wide foundation is in process - of construction. By the end of this S year it is expected that the whole of Pembroke Road will have been reconstructed aiTd. made permanent in I bitumen, while a metal road on which cars may pass at any point will extend to the House. By this time next, year it is hoped that the road will be more than half way beyond the House towards the Plateau.
