Shoctfng Season Closes. To-day marks the close of the
shooting season. The Gaming Act. Mr. W. Power, secretary of the Stratford Racing Club, has forwarded to Mr. W. J. Poison M.P. a petition, signed by 112 Stratford residents, i> sling for amendments to the Gaming .Act. SchoolhduSG Fire. Messrs J. A. Valentine and J. McAllister, members of the Taranaki Education Board, yesterday held an inquiry into the cause of the fire which destroyed the schoolhouse at Makaliu. They will submit a report to the board. Earthquake Relief Fund. The Stratford earthquake relict fund now stands at over £7OO. The most substantial recent, contributions are £35 7s 3d from the West Coast Association's ball and a first instalment of £6 3s 2d from tile. -Cardiff Social Committee.
Rainbow Trout. The last- batch, of the Acclimatisation Society's order qf 20,000 rainbow trout, arrived yesterday. As has been the practice: for the past three years, a good portion will be liberated in the lake at Rntapiko. It is reported! that trout previously liberated have bec> u seem rising, indicating that the lake, should soon provide some fishing. Agriculture Department Mr W. J. Poison (Stratford) in the House of Representatives yesterday, asked the Minister of Agriculture if he had had his attention drawn to the serious charges made against officials of the department in the Hist issue of the Exporter, and if so what steps lie proposed to take. Mr Poison also asked if, in view Of the general feeling of uneasiness existing in the minds of the producers, he would consider the possibility of re-organising his department. The Hon. G. W. Forbes asked that the question should be pat on the order paper <n order tl ar. he might give a considered reply. •
SI Iff Fines. At the Eltham Court: yesterday, Leonard H. D. Eves, of Rowan, was fined £25, with costs £3 7s for shooting pigeons (absolutely protected game), and £SO, with costs 10s, for wilfully shooting birds within the boundaries of the Egmont National Park. On a charge of shooting . grey duck (imported game) without a license lie was convicted and discharged. A month Avas allowed for payment of the fines. Sergeant Henry stated that on July 4th, Mr Larsen, the ranger, and his assistant, were at Rowan, and defendant, on being questioned, admitted that he had shot fourteen pigeons and grey duck on the previous day.
