"STRATFORD EVENING POST" WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 1929 THE MAYOR’S ANNOYANCE.
j HIS Worship the Mayor was, and \ perhaps still is, peeved—distinctly (annoyed; in fact, with most of the Domain Board members, the Rugby Union including its President, and I the Stratford “Evening Post”. What the others may think about it we do not know, but for ourselves we are ' not in the least disposed to adopt any attitude of contrition. What we did in regard to the 1 football match charge, we will do. again if similar circumstances arise in connection with that or any other matter, Mr McMillan’s annoyance, notwithstandling. The whole trouble arose because the “Post” and others would not tolerate anything savouring of ? what we considered! amateur Mussolini methods. In his statement to the Domain Board on Monday night', His Worship madia a. veiled, suggestion that the “Post’s” leading article was inspired hy the President of the Rugby Union, Mr R. Masters. It was not and in case the Mayor may not have learned front, past experience perhans lie will forgivel ns for informing him that Mr Masters does not need newspaper articles, inspired' or otherwise, to- assist him in any controversy in which lie may engage, finite a number n P people have found that out before to-day. Which disposes of that point. Then the Mayor announced that the special meeting of the Board) was called for the purpose of considering a.n application from the Rugby Union regarding the charge for the Canterbury match but > he was prepared to allow the other matter to he discussed). His generosity in this regard would he appreciated and we would give h*m credit for if,, had we not been informed on very good authority that when the Mayor was first approached by a; member of the Board who desired him to call a special meeting to discuss Dip position the member in question informed him that if he. (the Mayor) didi not do ■ so he himself would have it done hy requisition. The necessary signatures were being obtained when word was received that His Worship was calling a meeting himself. However, the important phase is that the question was discussed and a. motion of censure was carried, which shows that the Domain Board is not going to tolerate anything having a suggestion of dictatorial nr one man Government of-} forts. His Worship says lie is prepared to resign if a public meeting calls upon him to dn so., That is quite unnecessary. No one desires him to resign. All that, is wanted! is that he give- effect to the wishes of the majority of those, who were elected hv the people of this town, and the Domain Board which is also the Borough Council is anparontly going to see tbet Im does : t.
