CARE OF TEETH

LECTURE BY DENTAL NURSE. There was a rather ' small attend- ! ance yesterday afternoon, when a lecture on the care of the teeth was de-' livered to parents by Nurse Whiteiside, who is in charge of the dental clinic in connection with the Stratford primary school. Mr W. Hoskin, chairman, of the School Committee, presided. Nurse Whiteside, in the course of her remarks, dealt fully with steps parents should take to preserve their children’s teeth. Mr Elliott, inspector of dental clinics, who was present, also made a few remarks. He said that of the 100,00 men who enlisted in New Zealand during the Great War, a third had to receive dental treatment before they could go to the front. This fact had ai strong bearing on the decision of the 'Government to. establish dental clinics. The speaker appealed for the co-operation of those present in keeping the Stratford clinic going. Most of the clinic service was free, but residents were asked to meet some part of the expenses. A small place like Murchison, recently devastated by the earthquake, had had a clinic for years, and always had ample funds, so that a progressive town like Stratford should have no difficulty in raising the funds required. Afj regards cleaning the teeth, the speaker said that water with salt in it was as good as anything.

Mr Elliott, inspector of dental clithe hope that in a few years it would be unnecessary to have clinics with nurses, but that only dental lectures would be required, parents having in the meantime been fully trained in the care of the teeth by the present dental nurses, A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Nurse Whiteside.
