CAR HANGS OVER BRIDGE
OCCUPANTS ESCAPE WITHOUT INJURY. Mrs S. Gadshy, of Opunake Road, had a narrow escape from being precipitated into the Tongahoi River yesterday. Mrs Uadshy was driving towards, Rate a aind just before the bridge was readied she passed a, mob of sheep, which had evidently made the bridge slippery, in attempting to straighten out, after turning onto the bridge, the eair skidded. Mrs Gadshy at once tried to right the vehicle, hut it would not turn and only swung broadside across the bridge. The car hit the rails, along which it was forced, till it reached the end of the bridge, where tlio front wheels slewed round and broke through the rails. The can- was left suspended, half ou and half off the bridge, with a. 21) or 30 ieet drop, into' the river hank beneath it. The occupants at once clambered to safety, and obtaining assistance from a passing car, were able to haul their car onto the road. The car was practically undamaged, and the party was able to proceed, little the worse for their narrow escape.
