RATING FOR ELECTRICITY

EXPLANATION OF POSITION IN STRATFORD EXTENSION.

Mr. M. Gernhoefer informed the chairman at yesterday's meeting of the Power Board that several ratepayers had told him that the chairman had. promised them that they ■would not he rated, so long as the Stratford Extension district returned a revenue which would meet the charges on tbe reticulation of the area. He asked the chairman if he had actually made that promise. The cbtxirmajn (Mr. |H. G-. Carman) said the state he made was that the; properties would not be subject to a< general rate —that, ratepayers in tne Stratford Extension were only pledged for a rate of their own district, rie had received a letter from a ratepayer on the matter, and had promised to get a return showing the financial position in Stratford Extension. Returns from the district had to cover interest and sinking fund on cost of reticulation, proportion of overhead' expenses and proportion of the total cost of producing current. Getting the return would involve a, great ueal of work, as each individual account in the district would have to be examined. Personally, he believed that the district was making a good return, but he could not say if the return would meet all reasonable charges.
