NO BOROUGH DONATION TO AMBULANCE FUND
MAYOR SAYS BOARD SHOULD BUY ST.
NECESSITY, NOT LUXURY. The Borough Council will not make any donation to the Hospital Board to hell) to pay for the ambulance the Board proposes to acquire. THE BOARD’S VIEW. The following letter from the secretary of the Board (Mr T. H. t'cnn) had been : The Board is being urged from '.vairiousi quarters to provide a motor ambulance for the district. 'The matter lias been under consideration by the ‘■Board ini the past 'upon several occasions, and hitherto the proposal has been deemed premature. The Board is now of opinion that the, time has come to reconsider the subject'. An offer lias been made by local garage proprietors to bon so the ambulance and provide a driver, and, in default of a better proposal, this would get over any difficulty in that direction. The Board, however. may decide upon providing its own driver and
housing. The main consideration is the financial on 6 and the Board favours an effort being made to raise the purchase money by subscription instead of by a levy on the rates. Would your Council consider) the matter of a grant? It would be subsidisahle by Government pound for pound and would act as an encouragement to other bod'es and private individuals to subscribe. IS IT A NECESSITY? The Works Committee recommend, ed that the Board bo advised that the Council regretted it had no authority to donate funds for the purpose, excepting ouf> of unauthorised expenditure. The Town Clerk said there was only £66 available for unauthorised expenditure.
Cr. Ward thought the Board might have informed the Council of the approximate cost of the ambulance. The Mayor was of opinion that if an ambulance was part of the equipment of a', hospital the Board should buy one out of its funds.. If they wanted some luxury then it would be quite right to ask for subscriptions If the ambulance was a necessity the Board was failing in its dluty if it did not buy it.
