BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Stratford Borough Council was held last night, when there were present: ihe Mayor (Mr. J. W, McMillan), Crs. H, O. North* O. Moore, J, McKee, A, Nelson, R. F, Harkness, W, H. Kelly, N. B, Fletcher and S, A. Ward, Cr, Lawson forwarded, an apology for absence. Ensign Prowse, Salvation Army, applied for permission to take a collection of one shilling from adults attending a concert to he ' given on Good Friday by the Feilding Salvation Army Silver Band and Choir.—Permission waa granted as requested. * The chairman of the Local Government Loans Board recommended certain small alterations in the specifications for the cottage to be built out of the proposed £2OOO loan, and also expressed the opinion that £350 appeared to he an excessive price for a motor mower. —Received. The Town Clerk reported that a further letter had been received, approving the loan, with the exception of the mower. Mr, P. Keller, chairman of the local Highways Council, wrote that as the Highways Board had recently received requests for the payment of subsidies on traffic inspectors’ wages, they would like a statement of the number of traffic inspectors employed by public bodies. —The information required has been forwarded.

Mr. G. A. Carter, secretary of the Stratford Acclimatisation Society, wrote that he had been instructed to ask for the completion of the demolition of the old electric light dam, as in its present state h still presented a definite obstruction toi the passage of fish desiring to reach the head waters of the Patea River for spawning.—The Foreman was instructed to give the matter the attention required.

A Wellington firm forwarded quotations for an electric syren for use in place of a fire-bell and also for a hand-operated one for use oil the fire-engine.—Hold over till next financial year.
