STRATFORD "POST" PRIZE

WON BY MR IV. PETTIGREW. MOUNTAIN CLUB MEETING. At! the Mountain Club's meeting lMt night, Mr W. Pettigrew was judged to be the winner of the ''Post's" competition for the best ideas for improving the surroundings of the Stratford Mountjain House. Several entries were received, but stome did not confine themselves t'o suggested improvements in the vicinity of the House. The following work was decided to be undertaken, and completed, in the order mentioned: To remove rubbish stacked up in various parts of the clearing, keeping timber suiti able for rustic work or firewood and burning the remainder; to complete punga fences; to fill in the underneath part of the upper house with cut pungas; t'o make a rockery fountain at the top of the road where it turns into the clearing in front of the House; to make rust'ic seats, tables and other things of a similar nature. The following were chosen to do certain branches of (die work: Messrs Pople and Pryor to do the punga work; Mr Moss to take charge of clearing up rubbish; Mr M. Moore to execute the rustic wiork; Mr G. Smart to take charge of the water arrangemoiuts in connection with the fountain; Messrs A. David and A. J. Barr to do the rockery work. •Mr J. I>. Lyons was appointed ' deputy chairman of the committee, and during the evening a sub-com-Imittee was appointed to go into the question of transport of the members to the Mountain, and the various committees were asked to make their pwn arrangements in this direction as far as possible. Mr Wilkinson, who was the found- . er and curator of the Nelson Mockery Gardens, and who is at l>iesent engaged on New Zealand natural rock gardens at 1 the Hutt, has kindly offered to give the committee any advice in regard to the foundation of rockeries. The committee has

accepted Mr Wilkinson's offer, and arrangements are betag made to take full advantage of same.
