SMOKE HELMETS USED

Sm'oke helmets had to be used at a fire among a large quantity of tires in the basement of Brunner’s Buildings, Cuba Street, last night. It was necessary for the brigade to break in through an upholstery factory Wonting Pringle Avenue to get a lead into the basement. Another lead was taken from Cuba gtreeN -it was a considleirablei time before the seat of the flames could be reached, and four hours elapsed before the outbreak was completely suppressed. The building, of brick, is owned by the Mary Kennedy Estate. The basement and bottom floor were occupied by E. W. Pidgeon and Coy., who hid been in occupation only a few days. Others in the building are the Edison Depot (phonographs), whose stock was damaged by heat and sm'oke, Robert Malcolm Ltd. and A. A Corrigan and Co., indent merchants and agents, on the first floor, who suffered similar damage. Fluenzol Ltd., on the top floor, had damage by smoke. A large quantity of tires in Hdgebn’s basement was damaged by fire and water, and the contents of the ground floor were damaged by heavy smoke. No insurances are available.
