CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of fho Chamber of Commerce was held last night when there were present: Messrs J. B. Richards (Chairman) E. H. Young, W. L. Kennedy, P. Thomson, and H. F. Flemming. Messrs J. H. Fletcher, W- McDonald and S. Macalister sent in apologies for absence.

DESTRUCTION' OF TREE FERNS.

In reference to the Chamber’s complaint regarding tlhe destruction of tree ferns in the Tangarakau Gorge, the clerk of the Whangamomona County Council reported the receipt of a letter from the Telegraph Engineer at Hamilton, stating that instructions had previously been given that trees or scrub along the route of telegraph lines were not to he unnecessarily cut do'ivn. ,As regards trees cut down in April last, only those had been cut down which wore considered a menace to the line, and to remove the line dear of the trees would have involved very heavy expenditure.—Received. EVERETT RESERVE. The Inglewood Chamber of Commerce asked for support in a request to be made t 0 the Minister for funds to improve the Everett Reserve. Mr Kennedy said the Chamber was being asked to support something it knew nothing about.

The chairman said that evefry other year the Chamber of Commerce conference was held in Wellington and the Wellington people spread themselves •in entertaining visitors so that it 1 was only right that people in the provinces should do something to entertain the Wellington people on their tour. It was decided that the chairman should reply to the letter, after conferring with the Mayor. IATERMKDIATE CREDITS. The secretary of the Associated Chamber of Commerce wrote that Mr a. Coleman’s letter, urging an amendment of the Rural Intermediate Credit Act, forwarded by the Stratford Chamber, would come before the next meeting of the executive.
