"STRATFORD EVENING POST" WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1929. A FORWARD MOVE.
AVITH a membership of 108 1 obtained in the short space of a week, and a\ goodly portion of it in one day, the newly born Stratford Mountain Club is a lusty infant. The initial meeting held o)n Monday nigljit, wfijS veiy promising indeed, and it was gratifyin,r to soo such, great interest "Being evTncoldl fin tho improvement of the East side of Mt. Egniont, the wonder fill scenic attraction which lies at Stratford’s back door. It was to carry out work of improving this side of the mountain, and making it more attractive to tourists that the oluh was formed, but it will also play a big part in creating necessary public interest. .Mmcht work is necessary before the area, in question. is developed to its full extent, and any movement of this nature merits full support. It was sated at the meeting on Monday night that, the niih_ | cation s wore that Stratford: was noW at the hegilining of a big forward move, in connection with the mountain,, but whether that is so depends upon the measure of support given by tli© townspeople. it the citizens are right BSJiind the project nothing can stop the attainment of success. On the other hand if the attitude of the Stratford people is one of apathy, the fullest benefit cannot bo obtained from the efforts put forward by those enthusiasts who are fighting a 1()11 ° battle against odds which are very great. Qf_course it is impossible to dV air that as necessary in a, hurry, but a well organised plan of action such as is contemplated must have tllie result of achieving much more than piecemeal operations. One of tbo thugs wnjicn must not he l° st sight of is the necessity lor extending the accommodation at the ihuuutani House, which, at the present time, is altogether inadequate, it is not suggested that anythting m the nature of an expensive hostel siioula be thought of as such buildings aro nob so vitally necessary now as was the case a few 1 years ago before methods of transport were so efficient. What is reaby wanted is the provisvishm cif small cottages or hashes Which could be iot to families or parties, and a certain amount of accommodation for those desiring to, board at the House. The Stratford Moun. tain House should not attempt to wrier for those demanding ultra superior accommodation but should pay more attention to tiie requirements of those of more limited means. Tins is c-n .Y one direction in' which the Club can find scope for its energ.es; there me many more avenues for improvement which can be exploited with profit, and wei feel sure that with the enthnsTasin such as is displayed by tho new organisation,' nothing will he lett undone that will make for the Ikmtcrme.it of this area, which is such an asset to the town. Nor can tnd value of the intoreat engendered y the Club’s formation he over ost.mL t *l| If the solid support _c.f P' llblio opinion can he obtained. Strar.ord is not going to have I<> sonic of the a-.tside influences winch ha o been brought to hear m the past, which had the effect of preventing thi, side of the mountain receiving the' recognition which R merits.
