CHARGED WITH FRAUD.
EX POSTAL EMPLOYEE... A MONTH'S GAOL. • ' HAMILTON, January 16. After 20 years service in the Post and Telegraph Office at Wellington, William John Gillies (36), left the Department and soon an awards toured the country in a car obtained on the hire purfha3« system.. He issued valueless cheques at several places, and at the Magjstvnto's Court here to-day, appeared to answer nine charges of fraud at Kati Rati, Hikutaia, Helensville, Bombay, Taka- # mini, Stratford, Okato, Auckland, Westmere, the total amount, being £27 15s. . Accused's counsel stated he had. left the postal service in the hope of bettering himself by taking a boot repairing business. He had had an accident to his head and also had a difference with his wife recently. Since bis arrest he desired to make restitution to the people he fed defrauded. Counsel asked for leniency, referring to accused's good record in the Postal Service and in the Expeditionary Force. The Magistrate, Mr Wyvern Wilson, sentenced him: to one month's imprisonment and two years' probation, conditional on restitution and total abstinence. He refused an application for suppress-, ion of the name.
