Officials of the Wellington .Trotting Club have made the following explanation in regard to the scratching of Native Prince for engagements at The Wellington meeting on Saturday., Mrs J. E. Sweetapple, owner of Native Prince, telegraphed from Auckland: “Native Prince unfairly handicapped, withdraw all engagements.” The Wellington Club’s officials, discovering that Mrs Sweetapple had. an impression that her house was handicapped on 15 yards, as published incorrectly in an Auckland newspaper, telegraphed; “Correcthandicap of Native Prince is 12yds; do yon wish to cancel scratching'”’ The club received a telegram from Mrs Sweetapple “Accept all engagements.” ■ The Wellington Club rules that it did not receive Mrs Sweetapple’s first telegram and waited for confirriiation of scratching until after she bad learned’ the correct handicap.
