NEWFOUNDLAND'S HOPE. SpR RICHARD SQUIRES. ' VANCOUVER, Nov. 14The return of Sir Richard Squires from five years' retirement, from public iife to the head of the Newfoundland Government, with a following of 28 members in a House of 42 members. affords an opportunity to recall the circumstances of his extraordinary career since lie was elected to Parliament at ■'. -the age of 20 in 1909. Born in Newfoundland, lie read law with Sir E, P. (Lord) Morris, and was Minister of Justice, Attorney-General and Colonial Secretary in the Government headed by his law chief. On that gentleman's retirement, on being created a Baron, Mr. Squires supported the Liberal leader, Sir Robert Bond, »nd, on his retirement, became Prime Minister in 1919. He visited London in connection with the Labrador boundary dispute, and it was due to his advocacy that the territory in dispute was declared Newfoundland territory. His sweeping victory at the polls now brings Labrador into the spotlight again. , Sic Richard, shortly after his knighthood, was adjudged guilty by a. Commission sent from England of having accepted £BOOO from the Dominion Iron and Steel Company., Ltd/, of ; Newfoundland, while l negotiations were in progress between the company and the Government concerning the obligations to be imposed on the company as from January 1, 1920, in a proposed new contract. Sir Richard retired immediately alter. He has now como back, with the. confidence of the people, in •■»■{ sweeping victory at the last elections. It is expected.."of him that Newfoundland's flagging industries will be revived. He is a man of extraordinary capacity, and is yet quite young. . "
