ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING

SEVENTH YEAR OF SCHOOL

The annual) prize-giving in connection with the Stratford Technical High School Wins held at the Town Hall last night in the presence of a large number of parents and inei.ds • the school. On the stage tvo e. Mr. A. H. R. Amess, the Principal, and other members G f the sesw»»«itg staif, Mr. S. Macalister (who presided), the Mayor. (Mr. J, W, McMillan), Mr. N. B. Fletcher and Mr. N. H. McKenzie (senior inspector under the Taranaki Education Board). FARMING OCCUPATIONS. In opening proceedings, Mr. S. Macalister appreciated the attendance of parents at the prize-giving, as it ■indicated their interest in what the teachers were doing for'the children. The staff- were to be eongrat.ula.ted on a successful year. For the girls' hostel the Board had secured- a lease, of a suitable house in 'Regan Street {East, and a good deal of money had been spent in alterations. The "Board, however, had not unlimited funds, and the hostel wouldj only be a success if it was fully made" use of. In a country which got 96 per cent, of its wealth from the l ail( l young people should be trained in occupations connected with farming or occupations in connection with the 1 handling and marketing of our products.

PRINCIPAL'S REPORT.

The annual report of the Principal stated that when the school opened seven years ago there were 164 pupils and a staff of six, while to-day there were nearly 300 pupils and a staff of twelve. Academic successes gained by the pupils during the year numbered 111. In sport the school had done well. In football the boys won their Third Grade Championship, and were only beaten for the Taranaki Championship by Tukapa after a staling game., They wojh Ithelir match against Feilding and played a drawn game, with Hawera. /The girls' hockey team won the ladies' Taranaki championship for the; thirdj time in succession. 'There were several innovations in the school work-during the year. Two new courses were established—trades and engineering for boyg and domestic fotf girls. Parents' Day had been very successful. The girls' hostel would be opened in February and parents would rest assured tljat girls would receive the very best attention. Thanks were due to Wa*rranVOifficeti Otiphant Riowe (far help with drill instruction. Concluding, Mr, Amess thanked membe.rs of the Board for their help and the staff for its loyal assistance throughout the year. Mr. MeKenzie addressed a few words to the pupils! who were leaving the school. Young people whe majde a false' start in life, he said, should not be discouraged, but should set about finding out the occupation for which they were fitted. BOYS' HOSTEL WANTED.
