“STRATFORD EVENING POST" THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 1928. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS.

IT is to be hoped that arrangements will be made this Christmas to -make the town, as far as possible, a centre of attraction for a large area of surrounding country. Last year the I decorations in Stratford fell short 1 of 1 what had been done in several other towns, where great pains had been taken to attract 1 people from the adjoning ’districts, and in this regard it may b e said some Hawke’s Bay centres boasted of really wonderful displays/ The suggestion has been made', and it 1 seems to be a good, one, that a meeting of representatives of th e Borough Council, the, Chamber of Commerce, Progress League *and business houses shoudl be-, held to discuss th e position, with a’ view to drawing up a scheme satisfactory to all. Decorations are very important, and there is ample scope for something outstanding to be done in this connection. Perhaps an arrangement could be made whereby the Borough Council could supply, the flags and coloured lights, ’the' business people to provide the greenery. The more peopel who can be induced to come here for their Christmas shopping the better it will 1 to, and there is no reason at all. why large numbers should not be attracted. It is admitted on all sides that the shops in Stratford are equal and in some cases better than these in other centres, while the stocks are extensive and of infinite variety. Christmas week could be made a real “shop in Stratford Week” and it will be made so if all sections co-operate and do their part, not expecting others to shoulder the greater portion of the burden. No doubt the matter will be discussed at the Borough Council meeting on Monday night next with a view to some arrangements being put in hand.
