Murphy, Eobscm Road, Pukengahu, was com, pletely destroyed by fire early yester, day morning, and Mr and Mrs Murphy and their son Jack escaped with only a. few personal effects. A tribute to the- work of the Auck-i land Automobile Association in signing the roads was paid by Mr N. H. The buried forest which has been uncovered and the newly-formed •waterfall attract a great deal of interest, and on the day Mr Moss was there there were about a hundred motor cars gathered at the spot. Interest in Athletics*. Thinking perhaps that the public might get the impression from the fact that the original annual meeting ' of the Athletic Club lapsed for want of* a quorum, that there was little interest in athletics, the athletes of the town made no mistake last night on the occasion of the adjourned annual meeting and turned out in splendid fashion, the A. and P. board room being crowded. The number present and the enthusiastic nature of the proceedings would seem to indicate that the athletic body in Stratford is a very live one.

Highways Board's Good Work. Mr N. H. Moss, who lias, just returned from a motoring trip to *lotorua and Taupe, tesifies to the -wonderful difference in the. roads since the Highways Board came into existence. He had been over the route six years ago, and he found the improvement in the roada on the present trip to he simply marvellous. Six years ago the trip over the, Mamnhii hill was a. great trial, the, surface being muddy, and it was necessary to cut scruh in order to pet through.
