Tho monthly meeting of the Stratford County Council was hold' this incming, when there were present: Crs T. It. Anderson (chairman), S. Pitt, W. Ticket, T. T. Murray, W. H. Were, J. T. Belcher, .1. Jacob* son, J. O'Neill /and H. 0. Taylor, INCREASED SUBSIDY. No. 7 Highways Council, notified that the Highways Board had decided to "increase the subsidy on maintenance and the construction of new bridges to £2 for £l. He added: Local authorities who have received! subsidies on expenditure Incurred en maintenance or bridge construction since Apru* Ist, 1928, will therefore be paid, as early as possible, the difference h iween the subsidy on tbel old basis and subsidy on thp two-thirds are now authorised. In addition, local authorities who hold monetary authorities for approved maintenance proposals or bridge construction proposals will have issued to them, additional authorities in order to enable work to be subsidised on the £2 for £1 basis tip to the estimated cost. It is not intended that this increase will reduce any subsidies being paid at a, higher rate tha n £2 f°» £l, nor is it intended! to make any subsidies which are at present being paid o n a£2 for £\ or higher basis, unless there are very special circumstances, and the case has been represented to the Board and approved. WIDENING BRIDGES. In forwarding decisions of the Main Highways Board in reference to Taranaki works, Mr T. M. Ball, chairman of the No. 7 Highways Councils, wrote: Concerning bridges general* ally the Board is of the opinion that the time Shas arrived when the local authorities in Taranaki should go in for a comprehensive scheme for the widtening of bridges on the No. \ Highway. At the present time there are a. large number of bridges on the No. 1 Highway which &re n*i rower than the formation, and the Board considers that the local autliorities should draw up a programme with a view t 0 widening these • strut* tures so as to conform to the width of formfition. —Received.

PEMBROKE ROAD LOAN. The chairman of the Local Gov eminent Loans Board wrote, inter alia: "With reference to the application for sanction to raise the Pembroke' Road Loan of £2OOO, I forward herewith notificaton of "sanction in respect of £2OOO. The Board declined to sanction, the balance (£l6) of the application. The Board has reduced £he rate of nterest, as it considers that in the present state of the market fqr local body loans it maty he possible to borrow fat o\ per cent. If, however, you are unable to obtain' the money at th'i s itite, application can be made for the precedent consent of the Minister of Finance." The following note was added toi the notification of sanction: Sanction is given; on the understanding that the 1 Government subsidv on the work will bo £1 10s for £l. If the subsidy is in* creased' the amount of the loan must be eorrespcffidlinglyt reduced. The matter of making arrangements for liaising ■ the loan was left in the hands of Riding members.

GENERAL. It was decided to notify the mortgagee of Young's property at'Puniwhakau that the bridge on the property was in bald repair, and that though the Council haJd) contributed to the cc*st of the 1 bridge, the Conn, oil bioW disclaimed Ifurtiher liability in the matter. The Ranger (Mr S. J. Cuff) repon. ed that during the month poundage had) been paidl on 82 cattle. Sixteen motor driving licenses had been is* sued during the month, bringing the total to date to 750. Ther e were few cases of driving without lights. The heavy traffic: by-laws would show a tiisy moroage aver last year. The tender of Mr R. Davis for suppy of dog collars w l :'-? accepted. The secretary of the Stratfor-l Cycle Club (Mr E. Morto-i) wioto asking permission lor his club to' hold races over the Council's roads. - -Permission was granted as requested. Tho Superintendent of the Nation, al Provident Fund wrote drawing attention to the provisions for the in, suranoe of employees of bodies which Have rating powers.—lt was decid- j ed that the matter be brought up at | the next meeting of the Local Bodies Association. E. MeCulloupr'h wrote asking for the construction of culverts and the carrying out of repairs on the unmet, ailed portion of the road to the Tawhiwhi Settlement.—'flip Engineer was authorised to spend £lO.
