FANCY DRESS DANCE. if';'Tho committees of the Library and N.Z. Workers’ Union held a very successful fancy dress ball recently. A goodly number turned out in fancy costumes, some of tho “original” Costumes evidencing great ingenuity. Some dissatisfaction was felt in this section at the results of th© judging, many being of the opinion that the award 1 in one case could have been placed better. However, none> envies a judge his job. Th,e winners of tho fancy dress were; Mrs Schwieters (Eastern Dancer); Mr Schwioters (Indian Rajah). f Tho “Originals”* were won by Mr ) Brennan (Johnny Walker), Mrs O’CarI rol (Chicken). TENNIS OPENING. |; . . ■ , v : The local tennis, club held its opening day last Sunday. A good! rally of players enabled some interesting sets .to bo run off during the afternoon. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs L. M. Fairbrother and Mrs G. J. Hall. The executive of the Club for the new season as s Mr H. H. Schwieters, President; Mr R, Holmes, chairman; Mr G. J.. Hall, secretary and club captain; Mrs L. M. Fairbrother, Mrs G. J. Hall, Mrs W. L .Smith, Miss McClennan. The committee hopes t .obavo tho , court top-dressed before the season opens in full swing. .. . ; j . ,p» Last Friday a • “wind-up” dance was staged by the “Learners,” who showed! that they were perfectly capable of providing an evening’s thorough entertainment. Mr N. ; Smith,’the local Postmaster, has received a transfer-to Oxford, .’ Jn thcj South Island. A “send-off” in his honour, was,'held last- .Thursday, when Mr Smith, -was the recipient of a leather suit..case and a travelling , rug. ,He carries, with him the well wishes of a large number of friends.
Mr Christiansen, of Taihape, ha# been appointed as Postmaster at Tangarakau. He will be a welcome addition to the local tennis club, as ho wields a “wicked' racket.” Mr and Mrs J .Taylor and family have taken up their residence in New Plymouth, Mr and Mrs J. E'ade recently returned fjrpm, (their honeymoon. On his return to work, Mr Eade had the misfortune to meet with an accident while working in tho tunnel. He happened to be on the wrong side ot some timber wh,en it fell. A team of basket ball players from the Raekohua School journeyed 1 to Tahora to play a match against that school. The girls have improved under their coach, Miss Y. McClennan,' but Tahora proved themselves the better, running out by 10 —0. Mr Dibley, accompanied by bis bride, returned to the Flat last Monday. Mr W. L. Smith, of th© local P.W.D. Office, is at the Stratford Office for a few days. Mrs W. L. Smith is spending a few days in New Plymouth and Awakino. Mrs T. Selby arrived homo with her son last Saturday. Mrs Savage has a baby daughter.
