WHIRLWING LEAVES TRAIL OF WRECKAGE

DAMAGE IN LONDON. POLICEMAN HURLED ACROSS STREET. LONDON, October 23. An extraordinary whildwind storm struck Mayfair, Piccadilly and Soho regions of London last night and left u trail of wreckage. A number ot taxi cabs were blown over, heavy omnibuses rocked like ships in a storm, people were blown down and a policeman was hurled across Piccadilly. The streets were littered with fallen tiles, chimney pots and shop signs. The unemployment exchange in Poland Street wa.s unroofed and thje police dosed Ike streets with barricades. The wind is described as a tornado on a small scale. It scattered everything moveable. Amazing numbers of thick plate-glass windows were smashed. An old newsvendor tin lifted bodily and! deposited on tbo roadway. Many wtre injured, most slightly. Earlier 1 in the evening there, were torrential rains and floods.
