BUTCHERED.
BY SINBAD, IN THE CHRIST-' . CHURCH STAR., / When on the License Bill I wrote, ' I must admit that I Was wrong. Last year, o ld Gordon was the goat, but now it’s quite another song, for 1 opined., (as who did not?), when he proposed his measure, that Parliament, with, tempers hot. the same performance would g)o through. The thought occurred at once to me: “The Drys will hack, this Bill about; put in a bare majority and cut the six-year tenure out. Old Coates will then disown the thing, and seme more favourable man will- take the Bill- beneath his wing/ until the Lords its progress bam”. That was the tale I thought I’d hear. Th e Drys, I knew, were bound to grouse, but they’ll be furious, I fear, to find it did not pass the House. Oh! Gordon, in a wily way, for last year’s crash ha s made amends. Its foes did not the measure slay, ’twas rather butchered by its friends.
