About 15,000 persons saw New Zealand win the first test to-day from New South Wales, under ideal conditions, by 15 points to 12 (four penalty goals and one unconverted try to three unconverted tries and a penalty goal). New South Wales kicked off against a slight wind, and within two minutes New Zealand compelled them to force. New South Wales were playing with great dash and White goaled fiv e minutes after the start with a beautiful penalty. New South Wales i. 3 New Zealand 0 New South Wales were throwing the ball about freely pursuing hustling tactics and collaring well. The passing on both sides was inclined, to be wild.

BAD HANDLING

Cooke booted to halfway, but bad handling lost New Zealand a good chance, playing returning to midfield. A forward rush gave New Zealand a five yards scrum. Awarded a free kick. Bradonovitch goaled. HOT ATTACK HELD.

A hot New Zealand attack was desperately held and Bradanovitch missed a penalty. Offside play cost New South Wales 40 yards. Freitas snatched up and scored, but the try w as disallowed. MyClymont was next over, but the hall was in touch i n goak Smairl made a great run and scored, but New Zealand were given a free kick for obstruction. New Zealand made a great attack and Cooke dramaticlly threw himself over the. line, hut was recalled for a knock-on. Wales attacked and were nearly;’ over. Half-time came with no further score. The pace throughout had been a cracker. Cooke was playing-a dazzling game, both in defence and Attack, and Porter was m the thick of it. SECOND SPELL. On the resumption New South Wales worked down the line to within five yards from the goal but New Zealand cleared to the twenty-five line; A good kick by Cooke set New Zealand on the attack, and a passing rush ended in New South Wales territory,' where from a free-kick Bradanovitch -goaled. . .

The pace was tremendous, hut New South Wales were unable to keep it up. They had an abnormal number of free kicks given against them, and this was the decisive factor in their defeat.
