GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE. LETTER FROM P.W. MINISTER.
At last night’s meeting of the Chamber of the Chamber of Commerce a'letter was received from the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, to the effect that they were further communicating with the Minister of Public Works, urging that adequate funds be provided for speeding up construction work on the StratfordMain Trunk railway. The Minister of Public Works wrote as follows: I can assure you that the Government realises the .desirability for the early completion of the Stratford-Main Trunk railway. The fact that it is now employing upon this railway more men than are employed upon any other work in New. Zealand may, I think, be taken as evidence of the Government’s intentions. The amount of money to be provided depends upon Parliament, hut it is my intention to ask-for sufficient funds to enable the work to be continued at the best economical pace. Mr Young said he supposed that the Minister’s assurance as to trienumber of men employed applied) to both ends of the line. The chairman (Mr J• P<- Richards) said that when the Minister was ip Stratford he was asked to make a pronouncement as .to how long the line would take to complete, hut he had not yet done so.
