NEWS FROM THE COUNTRY

- / FROM “POST” SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. TANGARAKAU. FOOTBALL. June 18. —The Flat secured an easy win by a comfortable margin against Mangaone despite the fact that Man-ga-one nris looked upon as a. team certain to lower the Flat’s colours, Mangaone’s strength lay chiefly in the forwards and it was through this department that they confidently expected to notch a victory. However, tluf Flat team excelled itself iu both backs and forwards and ran out winners by 23-J.

The g)ime was not so onesided as the scores, would suggest as Mangaone struggled strenuously to reduce the margin of points. The outstanding forwards for the Flat were Green, Tubby, Brooks and Robertson. However, the work done by the remainder of the pack was highly gratifying- In fact it is perhaps, hardly fair to pick out any individual. It was just simply a case of a team on the top of its form overcoming all opposition. Although Mangaone looked' dangerous on a few occasions they never looked like winners from the start.

Tiie bustling tactics of the Flat forwards and the sure tackling and handling of the backs were factors too large for the Mangaone team, to cope with successfully. Mangaone’s three points came from a try by McKay near the end of the game. For the Flat Brooks scored r try, Morgan scored one which O’Carroi converted, while Hall scored two tries and kicked three penalties. Early in the game Oalgher received a nasty cut over the right eye and had to retire. Near the end of the game Hall was injured while smashing his way over the line to score a try. Although his injury was not serious it necessitated his retirement from the field.

Mr. Cus Murphy from Wlianga, refereed.
