DAIRY PRODUCE
BRIGHT PROSPECTS.
FOR BUTTER AND CHEESE,
“The butter market was a little disturbing when I left England, but the prospects for cheese were quite bright,” said Mr George H. Buckeridge, of Hawera who returned from England via Vancouver by the steamer Niagara. Mr Buc'keridge has been the Taranaki representative
of the firm of Henry A. Lane and Company, of Tooley Street, London, for the past 20 years. Continuing, he said the signs were that the cheese market would he quite good for the remainder of the season. Quite a quantity of paraffinwaxed cheese was sent Home last season. This process was new to New Zealand. The cheese was selling well, and there was quite an appreciable saving in shrinkage, amounting to from 1 1-4 to 1J per cent.
The conditions of trade generally at Home seemed to he improving, and there was every prospect of the coming season being a good one, and it was expected that New Zealand producers would share in the general improvement. Mr Buckeridge has been to England in connection with a new vacuum process for packing food products. He had nothing to say in this connection, stating he had to make his report to the principals of the Vacuum Products, Ltd., first. His trip demonstrates how close we are getting t 0 the Old Country. He left New Zealand by the last trip of the Niagara on March 14, spent five weeks in England, and is hack in New Zealand in approximately three months from the time of his departure.
Mr Buckeridge spoke of an exciting experience he had in America. He was on an express train travelling between St. Paul and Chicago at over 50 miles an hour when the middle driving wheel broke off at the axle. The piston rod was driven through the end of the cylinder, and there was a great escape of steam. The driver Kept his head, and brought up the long, heavy train of 18 coaches in about its own length, and, remarkable to relate, no damage was done, not even to the track. Mr Buckeridge says he took off his hat to the engine-driver.
