“STRATFORD EVENING POST” THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 1928. DRINK AND MOTORING.

AS the Magistrate remarked at Strata ford on Monday, in the majority of cases where motorists are charged, and there is a suggestion of liquor, only one or two mild shandies have been consumed. I n fact if would seem that amongst motorists there is little demand for any other form, of beverage. However, it does not matter what bind of liquor has been drunk, if it ha H an. unstcadying effect on the driver of a car. If a small “shandy” or a glass of wine or for that matter anything else hasl the effect of making him unsteady he should leave it alone. Drink and motoring do not go together, and if there is the slightest suspicion of intoxication the police should thoroughly investigate, and if such course is warranted, prosecute in every case. A man who is walking cfong the street may be mildly intoxicated, but yet quite capable of loosing after himhelf. such an instance police interference would not be warranted, but when a man is in charge of a car and in a position, where by making a slip, he can cause injury or/ even death to an innocent person it is a different matter The slightest unsteadiness in such a case should he enough. Magistrates are usually fairly hard on such peopfe, bub tho punishments .dealt out are evidently not sufficient to he an example to* others. Die penalties inflicted should he so severe that tho menace of the tipsy motorist will be removed. Ho is not only a menace to himesll, which some people say does not matter much, hut also to others using the highways, which matters a great deal.
