MEETING OF COUNCIL. Tlic monthly meeting of the Whangamoniona County Council was held on Monday. Present were: Ors belaud (chairman), Jcletche.r, Ford, Cower, O'Neill and lloberton.Cr. McCiuggage was grantf? leave of absence. A letter was received from Air '!'■ M. Ball, District Engineer (District Highways Conned), in reply to Mo Council's letter re the Ohura. Highway advising) that the Main Highways Board has not yet dealt with the question of declaring a further length of Government Road. The Council would l)e advised as soon as a decision was received.—Received. The Commissioner <xr Crown LaiitiA New Plymouth, wrote with reference to the Kchuratahi metalling scheme. A deputation of .settlers had recently waited upon the Hon. Mr McLeod, the Minister of Lands, relative to a. metalling scheme to give metalled access to- the Kohura Settlement and adjacent property. Hie deputation had explained that the Whangamoinona County Council was not disposed to favour the metalling scheme in. view of the existing state of legislation debarring the Council from selling up for non-payment of rates. ! There was a possibility that the Department might meet the position by ! providing tile necessary funds an(! loading the land with the cost*. In order that the matter might he considered, the Council were asked to indicate on a map enclosed the length 01 read to be metalled, and the sections which it was proposed to incorporate in the special loan area. It ' was understood that other sections I besides Kohura Settlement had. been j included in the -special loan area. Any information regarding the estimated cost of the job, quantity of metal to be swead, locality of metal, etc., would be appreciated. * RAM WAT*Mr L. C. Sladden, County Jlnginoor, wrote with regard to Mr \V. Siia nlis' application for a tramway along Tangarakau lioad. Replying w the Council's recent letter, it wits t w.„.J olid that the Tramway Acu 1908 seemed, to cover all matters m this connection in which the Council was immediately interested. Attention was drawn to Sections 12 to 20 ol the "Act, which seemed to b© applicable to the case in,-, point. ,lt was therefore suggested tuat the Council's consent be given, provided that any proposed tramway uo constructed in accordance witn 'the provisions of the Tramway Act 1806. it was suggested that the Council obtain an assjrancj. iroin its solicitors that the Act a requately provides lor the protection oi the interests'of the Council and the public generally. Section lv of tho Act sets out the procedure tu be adopted by a Local Authority or> receipt of an application fo-r a license to construct a private tramway. lfc would seem to be reasonable that any costs incurred by the Council hi connection with the application should be paid by the applicants. It was decided that the clerk beinstructed to place the matter before/ the solicitors, setting out the position and asking them to draw up a suitable agreement. On tiie motion of Cr. Roberton, seconded by Or. Jj'ord, the resolution tuat all cvsts be borne by the applicant was carried. Mr 11. Gooding, District Inspector of Health, reported that S cases ol diphtheria had been reported and dealt with during March, otherwise the district liad been free of infectious diseases. A visit would be paid to the County during tne coming week. Slaughter house licenses were renewed on the application of Messrs M. Geever, and McCarthy (Taliora). It was decided to write asking Mr J. ,B. Richards if he would be agreeable to appointment, as assessor in the county. The Council's next meeting will be held on the 23.-d of July, °u ac ~ count of the forthcoming Counties' Conference A resolution that 10 per cent, penalty on all unpaid rates be imposed as from July 8.1, was earned. Jt was decided to accept Mr Sandiford's offer for carting timber for Arnold Koad bridge. Accounts totalling £460 Cs 4d were passed for payment.
