THE BACK COUNTRY.
TO THE RDITOB ■ Si r> —in answer to Mr McCluggage’s letter appearing in your valuable paper this evening I beg; to state that I got my information from a paragraph which you published; on Friday last, and in this there was certainly no mention of credit i be-, ing given to anyone else but the 'Minister. Ido not say the Minister,' whs not entitled to credit for what he has done. What I say is that the problem was not dealt with by the Government until our late Member brought it up i n the House, and by his handling of the subject in Parliament forced attention to it. Others had gone into the matter, and made representations on the subject but little jf any progress was made until Mr Masters made his; representations in Parliament. I may 'lib wrong but it is my firm opinion ■that jfTt had-not been for Mr Masters, the action taken by the Government would have been delayed oven longer than it was. lam glad to hear that Mr McCluggage gave thanks in'his communication to the Ministei, to all who' assiatted the back country settlers, but'anyone reading the note published by you must ha.ye f gained the - impression that Mr McCluggage regarded Mr McLeod as the oh,e;most' / entitled to the gratitude Of those out back. I am, etc.,, V NON PARTY, c Stratford; May 28. \ —' : : —~~
