Henri Hermene Tovell, a French war orphan and diggers’ mascot, died ad the result of a collision between his motor cycle and a taxi cab in Spring Street ■■■.,. ■ Toyeli’s father was killed in Fiaiid- . o rs in 1915, and his mother was killed by German raiders, leaving Henri ad orphan for five years. He was rescued from the ruins and became the mascot o;, the Fourth Squadron of the Australian Forces. He wandered from' one unit to another on the battlefield, and was wounded on two occasions. When the Ar’rhistice was signed he was cleverly smuggled aboard a troop ship bound At/' Australia in a sack containing loaves of bread. —Australian Press Assn.
