(Received 8.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 23. 1 A message from Mather states that the authorities have abandoned all 'hope of rescuing any more entombed 1 miners alive. It is finally estimated the i number of dead is 197. The bodies of 161 of these have now been recovered and tlhirty-tlhree are still UiViccounted for, but more bodies are being ' discovered hourly.
