ACUTE DISTRESS
UNEMPLOYED LABOURERS, HUNDREDS IN DUNEDIN. . . (Special to Post). DUNEDIN. May 18. According to Mr Harrison, secretary of the Goneidl Labourers’ Union, there are in Dunedin some 200 unemployed labourers, men who hare been tramping the streets for months and have been unable to find work of > any.description. The fact that over 500 men went to Port Chalmers in an endeavour to obtain work in the repairing of the O. A. Larsen, is striking illustration of the existing state of afi'.iirs. The City Corporation and the various manufacturing concerns and foundries can provide no work. Some time ago' the employers’ and manufacturers’ associations agreed to work in conjunction with the City Council in attempting to alleviate the position, but nothing came of it. Sevc.l l of the unfortunate men have stated plainly that they would go to prison rather than face starvation. The dependents of these men have suffered severe hardships, and many distressing cases have been, reported. As a case among many, one Avoir, m says sue has not had a .single piece of coal for her home for three or four months and she hag forgotten what coal looks like.
