RAGLAN BY-ELECTION
COATES AND CONFIDENCE. WORN OUT SLOGAN. “In view of the forthcoming byelection at Raglan, I think some stops should lie taken to prevent the undoubtedly unbridled expenditure into which the Government will plunge to rs ecu re the return of its candidate,” said Air Leo (Auckland East) in the House of Representatives last week. “At present the position is that, immediately a candidate* is selected the Reform party can publish a special edition of the ‘Newsletter.” that malicious and misleading journal, which can he placed by the Reform party in the hands of every elector. This assistance for the candidate will not be provided out of the £2OO which he is entitled to spend. It is not desirable that there "should he a repetition of what took place at the last (‘lection, when vast sums were spent. There was so much of ‘Coates and Confidence’ on the handbills at the last election that the country was almost nauseated. No doubt the photograph of the Reform candidate for Raglan would go out encircled with red, white and bine, hut the Reform party could not use the old slogan of “Coates and Confidence.’ Indeed, if they were to publish photographs of Coates and the Government they would put people, off voting for their candidate, (Laughter). Al? candidates should start on an equality, and something should ho done to prevent any unfair advantage.” The Hon. McLeod ; It won’t ho necessary. Air Lee: I have a feeling that it will.
