DETECTIVE SUED
DAMAGES EOll ASSAULT, Pei* Press Association. WELLINGTON, Friday, Detective William Robert Cooper was to-day sued for £2B damages by Henry Morningtdn Smith, a seaman, for injuries sustained in an unprovoked assault by Cooper. The Magistrate gave judgment for Smith for £ls, with £3 13s 6d medical expenses and costs amounting to £B. Cooper had recently been found guilty at a police enquiry on tha( charge of assault and fined £2. Cooper was stated to have taken Smith to a room in tho Taranaki Street police station, after questioning him in tho street, and then punched him in the mouth, necessitating three stitches in his lip.; Cooper also accused Smith of knocking about with undesirable people when, in fact, Smith had only been ashore for five hours.
