HEAVY FIGHTING
JiORTHEKNEIiS LAUNCH ATTACK SEVERAL CITIES TAKEN. Press Association —Copyright, Australian and N.Z- Cable Association. (Received 11.15 a.m.) . SHANGHAI.. May 6. Heavy fighting on both sides of the Yanztsze apparently marks the end of the stalemate as far as Chinese military warfare is concerned. The Northerners launched wave after wave in an attack against "a Si..~il force of two. divisions of 'Chiang-kai-shek's in the region of Nanking, who have been holding out for two days, against numerically superior odds. They were finally forced to retire before a desperate Shantung assault. The Nationalists thus lost the , capital of Anwhei province, also j those cities on the direct, line to : Hankow. The latter's position is now pre- j carious. It should fall to the Northerners within a fortnight, as once Chlang-kai-shek's forces are eradicated, little opposition will he encountered from the Hankow Communists, p Chiang-kai-shek slightly counter-
ed the Anwhei reverse by driving I across Yangchow, the fall of which I is reported, but not confirmed.
