Israel Melcher (54), was charged a.t the Old Bailey with attempting to blackmail Harold Rubin, a wealthy pearl dealer and prospective Conservative candidate for Wednesbury. The evidence’ showed that Rubin’s father acquired his fortune from 'the West Australian Pearl Trade . He sent Melcher to Shark’s Ray to buy pearls and Melcher said he lived a lonely life there Tor seven years. Then his health broke clown. The prosecution alleged that Melcher threatened to disclose that Rubin was paying secret commissions and thus ruin his political careerIt is also alleged that Melcher retained certain papers relating to Rubin’s business. Rubin denied ad the allegations. The ease was adjourned.
