MARVEL OF SCIENCE

AUSTRIAN iNVENiiON TO SEE UNDERGROUND. WILL SAVE MILLIONS. (Received 9.5 a.m.) (Sun Cable). LONDON, January 24. The Daily New?, says that another chapter in the- romance' of mans search for the world's hidden mineral wealth has been opaned up, by the recent developments of a method ol seeing underground by electricity. Rosefjrch tests are being .made in Persia, with a, view of extending the application of the process to prospecting for oil and minerals. It is expected to save millions by replacing costly boring methods., and at the same' time safeguarding investors against wild cat schemes. The discovery is the outcome of investigations made by an Austrian engineer, who in war time, was engaged listening in to enemy conversations by means of wireless earth telephones. He noted the. different conductivity of various rocks and minerals. The apparatus includes a, portable alternating dynamo, iron rods, driven into the earth roughly a mile apart. These serve as electrodes for the transmission of current earthwards. Tho receiving gear consists of a r frame and an aerial, connected with an amplifier and earphones. The listener, by moving the aerial, is enabled to draw a diagram indicating the deflect-; ions of earth currents., from which, exact, position and depth, of any mineral deposit, water or oil can be ascertained.
