NEWS FROM THE COUNTRY

NOTES AND COMMENTS. FROM -TOST" SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS. WHANGAMOMONA. January 3rd.—Tlie New Year holidays passed just as quietly as the Christinas ones did here, or oven more so, as no public picnic was arranged. Numbers of families held small picnics among themselves on New Year's Day, when the weather was ideal for this kind of excursion, (being fine but considerably cooler than it has been for some time. However, picnics in tbe bush,, or even in more open spaces, lose half their charm when tho ground is wet and sodden with about a week's rain. Quite a number of people left by train for the Stratford races, where they spent an enjoyable day. Sunday was very wet again this week. It is generally hoped that the weather will soon" show some improvement, as the main road through the Tangarakau Gorge is now open. Mr Waters, of the Public Works Department, is making preparations for the resumption of the metalling of the Whangamomona Saddle as soon as the weather permits. Tim dance which was held in conjunction with' the Boxing Day sports was a pronounced success from every point of view. Besides a large crowd of local people, visitors from all parts of the district were well in evidence, and Mr G. Partridge, as M.C.. did not allow time to lag, and ensured an enjoyable evening' for all present. Mr J. O'Oarroll, of Tangarakau, who supplied the music, also did much to promote the evening's pleasure. Several extras were played. A committee of ladies prepared and handed round the supper. The dance, which was hastily arranged for New Year's Eve, though not so well attended, was nevertheless a pleasant gathering of young, people to dance the old year out'and the New Year in. Two firms" of Stratford business people, who kindly donated trophies for the Boxing Day sports, D. J. Malone and Co., and Bellringer Bros., were omitted fro mi the report last week.
