TARANAKI TOURNAMENT.

(Special to "Post.") NEW PLYMOUTH, January 4,

The Taranaki tennis tournament, at which the New South Wales players are competing, began this morning on courts which were thoroughly soaked overnight, hut were drying in the sun. The competitors number 180. The visitors include P. Haege (Victoria), Malfroy, France, Melody, Wilson, Peacock (Wellington), and Dr. Christie (Wanganui). None oi the leading players was extended in the matches played this morning. Championship results: Men's singles.—First round: I. P. Grant beat Young, 6—l. 6—o; N. Peach beat J. D. Smith, 6—o, 6—l; Dr.. Nprth. ;oat J. Hine, 6—o, 6—l; J. J. Vul.i.. beat Pryke, 6—3, 10—8. Second rouiid: F. Peach beat Nicholls, 6—3, 6—2. Ladies' Singles.—Second round: Miss Hilles beat Miss Cowper,. 6—3, 6 —4; Miss E. Ballautyne beat Miss Nutting, 6—3, 6—4. Play began late and will resume at, 2 o'clock this afternoon.
