J : Bullock v. Kellihg (Seatch opening) .—Helling lost a pawn but afterwards improved matters by winning the exchange. Bullock's pawn position, however, was very strong and Kelling had to light a > long rearguard action. Bullock eventually scored at move 66. Davies v. Fairburn (Sicilian defence). —There was cautious, play into the middle of the game, when Davies obtained a strong advanced passed pawn. Fairburn got into_a bad position and failed to make the necessary number of moves at the end of the second hour's fttay, allowing Davies to win by default a game that could have not lasted many more moves. • Roberts v. Moir (Queen's lawngame).—ln effect it was queen's gamhit declined. The queens and rooks were slaughtered early, leaving only one major piece to each on the board in an even position. Moir offered a draw, which Roberts accepted. . Erskine v. Gyles (queen's gambit declined). —Erskine pushed a strong* attack and prematurely gave up a roko for a bishop. Gyles, however, : did not make the most of his position and Erskine, "preventing Gyles from castling and maintaining his attack, obtained Gyles' resignation at' the 39th move. ;Pleasants v. Miller (French de- . fence). —Miller exchanged .'his two Knights for his opponent's two bishops/ Pleasants outplayed' Miller in the middle of the game, and after a long game received Miller's resigna- ' The fifth round - commences this afternoon.
