Miss Richards, Matron of the home for deaf and dumb patients at Sumner, who has been staving at the County Hotel, left for the South by the mail train this morning.

Mr. R, Clarke, of the railways clerical staff, Wellington, who hai been spending the holidays with hit parents", Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Clarke of Stratford, returned to Wellingtoi yesterday.

The death occurred at New Plymouth yesterday of Mrs E. F. Fookes, after an unfortunate illness following upon a. scratch on the hand. Mrs Fookes had not been in good health for some time, and blood poisoning ensued after she had scratched her hand some weeks ago. Her condition became so serious that it was found necessary to a mT, utate her arm. Tt was hoped that this would lead to a complete recover?, but such wag. not the case. Mr. Fookes was the second danoditer of the late Caution ann" Mr<j Oanel. She was verv hieh"V thought of bv the mauv peoole with whom she en mo in contact, and deep sympathy win be felt for Dr. Fookes and his family in the loss they have sustained.
