WHANGAMOMONA COUNTY

COUNCIL'S MEETINC. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Whangamomona County Council was held in the Council Chambers, Whangamomona., on December 20th. There were present: Crs. Olemow (chairman) Fletcher, Ford, Gower, Mc Cluggage, o''N«il and Roberst-on. INWARD COR RESPONDENOE. No. 7 District Highways Council, Stratford, re loans to local bodies, stating that a table of annual sums to meet interest, and sinking fund had not been prepared.—Received. Some re state of bridge approaches on Main' Highways, requesting that attention be given to their proper maintenance if necessary.—Received.

Main Highways Board; Wellington, ro tar-sealing of Main Highways, setting out distinguished features between maintenance and reconstruction. —Received. Valuer-General, Wellington, with reference to a revaluation of the County, stating that he could not say when the work would be undertaken. Comnnissioner of Crown Lands, New Plymouth, requesting to be advised if the Council would accept control of the Huiakania Cemetery Reserve. — Agreed to. State Advances Office, Wellington, letter, re proposed loan for renewal of Tapuni Road bridge, stating that tlio Department could not assist tho Council in the manner desired. —Received.

Taranaki Local Bodies' Association, ro allocation of heavy traffic fees, requesting to; be avised as to which, scheme is considered preferable, also requesting an opinion on the various resolutions passed at the last meet-ing.-—lt was decided that the Association be informed that the Council favours the method of allocation at present adopted, and failing that, the. proposal of Mr, P. Skoglund. The Council agreed to endorse the action of the association in regard to resolutions passed in connection with general matters affecting tho Association.

Same, asking to bo supplied with, particulars of any objections to local bodies being brought under the Dominion Federated Drivers' Award. —It was decided to state that the Council's objection to the award was that it might prevent drivers undertaking any other work.

New Zealand Counties' Association, copy of letter to the Valuer-General, regarding the supply 0 f valuation rolls as affecting rattng, together with a copy of reply thereto. Same, wandering stock, requesting that responsible authorities take action to abate tho nuisance.—. Received-.

' 1 'lie Dominion Federated Sawmilleis'" Association, ro rating on value of standing timber, outlining points bearing on the question, and requesting the Council to give them consideration before committing itself to the appeal being made. .Stratford liorough Council, regarding the visit of T.R.H. Duke and iJuchess of ¥ork, forwarding a, copy of'a letter received from the Minister of Internal Ailairs, and extending an invitation to all Council and County residents to visit Stratford to assist in giving a. fitting welcome. —Received'..- '

The Treasurer, Dobson Coal disaster Relief Fund, forwarding a subscription list, and requesting that an aprpeal b© made for the Relief Fund. A. S. Paterson and Coy., New Plymouth, making application ' to the Council for permission to erect a K.crbside pump at the premises of Messrs Rooney and Coy., Wiiangomomona, —It was decided that the application be granted on the same terms as those imposed by the Stratford County Council in the matter of annual fee for Kerbside pumps. A. C. Milne and other farmers, Whitianger Road, regarding condition of Whitianger Road, and urging that the road he improved at an early date to i'aciliate wool carting operations. —The letter was received, the matter of having necessary repairs effected left in the hands of .the Chairman. The Clerk was instructed to reply stating that the Council intended having the road graded and completion of grading operations on the Main Highwajs,

Surfaceman Metcalfe, Pohokura, reporting damage clone on the junction itcad. —'Ino report was received, Cr. .Uctiuggage stating that lie had arranged with Mr Coulter to repair the damage. lie had undertken to clfect repairs with the assistance of three men lor two days.— 1 lie action of Councillor McCluggage, was confirmed.

Suiiaceman \V, Pope, Kolnirntalii, reported on the condition oi Makahu Road, and stating it would take three weeks, with the grader to make a. job ©f it- — I'h© reporD was received, the matter being left in the hands of the Chairman.

Ceorgo Stockwell, Whangamomona, respecting the state of Marco Road, anci requesting that he he authorised to execute ;v week's work thereon. — 'J ho Cleric was instructed to reply stating that the Council could not .see its way to employ labour on the section referred to other than that of the surfacemtn.

W. C. Walters, Overseer, Public Works Department, Whangamomona, making a proposal that the County motor-iorry could be used in the metalling of Whangamomona Saddle. Uiiura Road, and asked what terms could bo arranged.— The Clerk was directed to; furnish the terms 0 n wiVich the Council was prepared to hire the lorry. GENERAL BUSINESS.

Mr. T. Lrydone waited on the Council in reference to his access via. Kohi Road, and requested to be informed as to the Council's, intentions as to opening the road from the Aototua and Makahu ends. —It was decided to instruct the surfacemen to execute repair work on Kohi Road from the residence of Mr. Brydone.

It !•, decided that the Chairman be requested to interview Mr Ball with regard to the section on Main Highways, Ngatimaru to Pphokura. The Council decided to adhere to the statutory, holiday for surfacemen during the ensuing year, in lieu of granting the days intervening between Xmas and New Year as in "the.'past, and that Surfacemen desiring leave of absence be notified to apply to the Hiding member for isame. Cr. Gover was authorised to employ M. ]>. McCluggage and T>. Morrison in the work of improving the state of Ma.rangae Road the cost of such work to be limited to £4O. .Surfacemen are to bo informed that it is their duty to traverse their respective lengths of roads during wet weather, for the purpose of turning water off the roads and generally attending to water-tables. Maintenance metal to the extent of six yards was authorised for Putikituna Road.

Accounts amounting to £IOB3 17s 7d were passed for payment.
