BOWLING.
AVON CLUB OPENED, The i flicial opening of the Avon Howling, and Croquet Clubs took place yesterday, when despite tho bad weather there was a good attendance. In addition to the Avon Club members there were present many representatives of other club throughout the province. A telegram was received from the Kaponga Club regretting that it was impossible for any members to be present and expressing best wishes for the coming season. In declaring the green open Mr Jonas Masters, the President of the Club, expressed pleasure at the large, attendance and extended a welcome to visiting bowlers, whom he asked to convey Avon's best wishes to their respective clubs. He then went, on to explain matters ill connection with the competitions, rjointinrr out that challenges for t?ie "stars" must bo sent in in writing. Mr Masters also extended thanks to MY Win, Rogers, who had donated n. silver cup for the singles championship, after which he presented medals to Messrs J. S. Mae Donald and A. D. Walker, the winners of the "A" singles and "B" singles respctively. " Mrs J. Masters threw the Jack and the green was declared open. Later in the afternoon Mr K. North presented to the club a framed photograph of Messrs ,T. Masters and A. S. Martin the winners of the Pairs competition. This was presented by the two gentelcmen in question, whom Mr North congratulated on their win. Mr Martin also spoke. On behalf of the club Mr J. C. Robins presented Mrs H. Masters with croquet mallet in recognition of her work in connection with the provision of refreshments during the year. He spoke enlogistically of the splendid service rendered by Mrs Masters and her lady helpers in this respect. Mrs Masters, in a humourous speech returned thanks. CROQUET CLUB. The Avon Croquet lawn was declared open by Mr H. C. North, who spoke" of the success achieved during the past season. The membership, he said, had so increased that difficulty was being experienced in acconimodniinrr players. Because o\' this the establishment of a, waiting list was being considered, which, if put into, operation, would mean that those wishing to become members would have their names placed on the list until vacancies occurred. Mrs H. C. North then struck tho first ball.
