INTOXICATED DRIVER.

STRATFORD PROSECUTION Yesterday afternoon Paul Newstrowski, in endeavouring to drive a car in Broadway, had some trouble with the gears, the frequent charging of which attracted the attention of Mr. A. E. Sayers, Borough Inspector. Mr. Sayers was under the impression that somebody was endeavouring to steal a car, and so as.ksd Newstrowski far his drivers license. This was not forthcoming, and as the Inspector thought the mans was to some extent under the influence of liquor he had him taken to the police station. . The above is wliat Mr Sayers told Messrs. S. B. Hunter and W. Mc Inness, J's. P.. at the Police Court this morning, when Newstrowski was charged with being found in a state of intoxication in charge of a motor car, and with driving the motor ear aJong Broadway without, being the holder of a driver's license.

[n answer to the Bench witness said, accused was alone in the car and there were several other cars in Broadway at times. Sergeant Reid stated that when Newstrowski was brought tot tho station he was under the influence ox liquor and was not in,, a fit state to drive a car. Newstrowski gave evidence, in which he deposed that a relative wlio possessed a license wisheu .him. to Jearn to drive and the said relative was only a couple or' chains away. He had driven the car before and denied that he was drunk. ■Mr. Hunter: _lf you haven't a license you have no right to dnve, a car in a public place. To Sergeant Reid: He tfidn't think he was drunk on Saturday, 'The Sergeant: Don't you remember my speaking to you on Saturday?— I wasn't drunk, was I? The Bench inflicted a fine of £5 on the first information and convieted and discharged accused on the charge* of driving without a license. Accused was also prohibited from applying fbr a driver's license for a period of two years.
