TO SETTLE IN NEW ZEALAND

INDIAN ARMY COLONEL. MORE'OFFICERS MAY COME. Among the passengers by the Mamma, which reached Auckland on Tuesday, was Colonel A. 11. L KingMason, of the Indian Army, who will lie retiring on pension in March next. Colonel King-Mason, who intends to settle in New Zealand, is accompanied by Ids wife and three children. He did not return to his family in, England after going on leave, but was joined by them at Ceylon, all coming on to the Dominion, via Australia. “A great many people in India talk of New Zealand, and many army officers speak of coming here on retirement,” said the colonel recently. “Many think it a fine adventure to come so far away to a country Hike this. Several have asked me to write to them and let them know what conditions are like out here, and I will do so after I have had time to gain a fair impressing of the country. I. know that a number of officers duo shortlv to retire would like to come here, but the trouble is that many of their wives do not like the idea, ot having to do their own housework—and that is the impression they have got, that domestic help here is very hard to got. In India, 6T course, there is a plentiful supply of cheap labour for the household, and women have very little worry in this regard.” ■ Though he will retire on a pension, Colonel King-Mason is neither of the age or inclination to seek idleness, and he will look for some: suitable employment. “As to what I can do I am not quite sure,” he said. }■ have for rears commanded my regiment—and that's all. Of business I do not know a great deal, naturally. “Still,” ho concluded, smilingly, J. don’t’think I’m too old to learn.”
