AN IMPORTANT MATTER.
PRIMARY SCHOOL GROUNDS. . , NEED FOR EXTENSION. A matter to which public attention might well be paid* i3*thg ! T)rovlsl<sh of more playground accommodation at the Stratford Primary School, where it must be recognised the space available at present is altogether too limited. No one can seriously, dispute the absolute necessity for proper playgrounds for school, children and the importance' of this phase from a health and recreation point of view need not he stressed farther. It is sufficiently obvious. It may be said that there is a sufficiency of playing space at the. Primary School. There is certainly a fairly large area hut it is not big enough nor is it altogether suitable. Amongst the scholars at this school there are 3 football teams, 2 hockey teams and 11 basket ball teams to be provided for. Even a casual inspection will show that the Headmaster and his staff have the very greatest difficulty in fitting them a*l in. Yesterday afternoon, to .quote but one instance, several girls were playing basketball, in one corner of the school grounds, while elsewhere, several other girls were. attempting to play hockey and .were compelled to encroach upon the territory of,the basketball enthusiasts. There is also need for the playground to be levelled, but the greatest need of all is more space, and it is to be hoped that something will be done in the direction of securing it. Np doubt the School Committee have the matter in mind, and in all likelihood they will endeavour to improve the position. But they cannot do much without the co-operat-ion and assistance of the townspeople. It is to be hoped that they will receive that assistance, because the matter is one of vital importance not only to all parents but also to all those who pay any attention to the welfare of the younger generation. As a local cftizen remarked yesterday it is even more important than the prize question.
