VALEDICTORY.
MR AND MRS C. I. SHRIMPTON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) To show their marked appreciation of Mr and Mrs Shrimpton, the settlers' of Huinga rolled up in strong force to bid them farewell last night, the hall being packed with well-wish-ers. . During the evening Mr E. Marfell presented the guests with a substan-' tial cheque and j Doulton bowl, stating that Mr and Mrs Shrimpton were the friends of everybody, and nothing was any trouble to them. To do anyone a good turn seemed their natural duty, and people of this class were bound to get on wherever they might be and" also make friends. Mr Shrimpton was also secretary of the local school committee, in which position he worked hard for the pro- j gress of the school. In Mrs Shrimpton they were losing a very capable and highly respected postmistress, and her place will be hard to fill. ' To the strain of the piano the building echoed with "For They are Jolly Good Fellows," with three hearty cheers and one special cheer for Mrs Shrimpton. Mr Shrimpton heartily thanked the Huinga people for their handsome gifts and their .flattering remarks. He was sorry they were leaving, as they had been the happiest four years thoy had spent in their lives, and anything that they had done was in the interests of the settlers, and they were pleased that they could leave tie district with everybody's good wishes; and he hoped that when he was settled down on his farm at Egmoht Village he will have visits from them. The evening took the form of a social and dance, the music being supplied by Rogers' orchestra. Miss Eaton and Mr Robson. Mr H. Cook and Mr D. Richards carried out the duties of M.C.'s. During the evening a song competition was held for ladies and gentlemen, Miss Paynter and Mr H. McLellan winning respectively. Songs and recitations were contributed by the following:—Mr Marshall, humorous monologue: Mrs Weir, song; Mr P. Aitken, song; Mrs Pettigrew, humorous recitation: Rogers' Orchestra, selection;. Mrs A. Marfell, song; Mr Robson, song; Mr C-ill, recitation. All'the items were encored. : Accompaniments were played by i Misses Rogers and Marfell.
