The Canopus was still idle at Lyttelton yesterday morning. There was also no response to. a call for men to discharge coal on the Coolana from Newcastle.. * ♦ <« Burned to Death. A Christchurch Press Association message states that Arthur Colilnsou Campion, middle aged, was burned to death at Riccartcn early this morning in a shed where ho had been sleeping since his father’s death. He had been a mental hospital outpatient and was depressed. * * * Taranaki Oilfields Report. Tlie Taranaki Oilfields report states that the Tarata. bore is drilled to 4775 feet in sandy shale. The Moturoa. well is being filled and. the casing withdrawn. At East Coast No. 1 the construction of th© rig is proceeding satisfactorily.—Press Association. • ♦ * * Raffle' Drawing Postponed. The Grand National raffle, which closed yesterday, has been an unqualified success,' th© gross- takings considerably exceeding £40,000. There has been an abnormal rush for tickets during the-past week, which will necessitate postponing the draw until the loginning of next week., * * * Injury To An All Black. , Brian McCleary, the All Clack and a professional boxer, was injured, ax, Christchurch, on Saturday when playing in his first competition football game- since his return from England. He received a bad cut on the face, necessitating eight stitches and an injured foot, the indications being that he broke a small bone. , : , . * * * - Rliver Protection Loan Lost. The secretary of th© Waimakariri River Trust has been advised that the result of last Wednesday’s £oll for a loan of■ £200,000 is that the proposal was rejected, 3321 bein»- for and 233.5 against. •; It therefore failed to obtain the necessary three-fifths majority. It was thought there was a possibility of being able to declare the poll carried c-n a bare majority, / - * ■» Cabinet Appointments. ; It is understood that no fresh appointments will be made to the Ministry before, the end of the present wek. In dealing with the question of th© Dominion’s finance at Wellington, the Primie Minister (Rt. Hon. J. G-. Coates’) said there was no reason for alarm, but the country would have to exercise caution in expenditure in the near future. No official figures have vet been made available for publication but th© balance for the last trade year will he against us : that is to say,- our exports will .not be equal to our imports.. That being the case all interested-rthe Government, local bodies, and private enterprises, will have to exercise caution and econamy in the future. *
Newspaper's Sixtieth Birthday, To-morrow the “Marlborough press’' celebrates its sixtieth birthday with an issue of 24 pages replete with historical facts about old Marlborough, and the issue is also profusely illustrated with photographs of the early years of the province. Not the least interesting feature is the front page, symbolising the progress of the district, presenting _ a vivid story without words, featuring “Marlborough the Golden.” Congratulatory messages received from leading public men of the Dominion and prominent newspaper men are featured.—-Press Assn. Association thig morning were discussing the clashing of Show dates the president, Mr Perrett. said the Association "did not seem to ho getting much further 1 forward in the matter. It appeared that whenever the Royal Show was held, it would interfere, with the Manawatu Show. Personally he could not understand what the,executive of the Royal Society were doing.
